黃玉龍個展 HOW+《甲乙丙丁》延至2月26日撤展

Huang Yulong's solo exhibition HOW+ "A, B, C, D" has been extended to February 26th and will be dismantled.

On December 24, 2022, Huang Yulong's new solo exhibition "A, B, C, D" officially opened at the HOW+ Project Space Exhibition Hall of the Digital Culture Trade Joint Lab, presenting a new picture of society to the audience.
Artist Huang Yulong's solo exhibition "A, B, C, D" showcases his sculpture series "Hoodie Man". The "Hoodie Man" series originated from street activities such as hip-hop culture and street dance. It is both a reawakening of the disciplined body, a challenge to the monotonous and cramped space of urban culture, and a yearning for a broader spiritual space.

The "A, B, C, D" series is Huang Yulong's expression of personality or emotions. Huang believes that people detach themselves from their real-world social roles, using hoodies as a shared "skin" to establish cultural identity and become passersby "A, B, C, D"—"A and B hoodies as a shared 'skin,' establishing cultural identity and becoming passersby 'A, B, C, D'—"A and B order hoodies become roles in new scenarios, new situations." Simultaneously, "A, B, C, D" is also a numerical sequence of collective identity, signifying participation in the construction of a field as a collective. Each hoodie wearer is a member of the A, B, C, D collective; their bodies undergo intense release in collective activities to express spiritual needs. The collective body is more prone to impulsiveness, tension, and vitality than the individual body.

Meanwhile, the disappearance of the sculpture's face leaves behind an empty "shadow," which represents the repressed part of one's personality. The shadow carries animalistic instincts, passion, aggression, and fanaticism, yet it also imbues one with vitality, energy, creativity, and life force. The shadow and the non-shadow together constitute a complete personality. One needs to confront one's own shadow and draw energy from it. Huang Yulong, once selected by Complex magazine as one of the "25 Chinese Contemporary Artists You Must Know," began creating his "Hoodie Man" series in 2008. His faceless form, combined with a hip-hop style hoodie and a resolute, heroic posture, is highly recognizable and imaginative, remaining Huang Yulong's classic trademark. His representative works, such as the "YueLiang" and "Hoodie Man" series, have gained international acclaim, and he has explored diverse cross-disciplinary collaborations with many international brands. His advertising billboards have even been displayed on the streets of New York.

Huang Yulong is a prominent contemporary artist who is aware of, has an attitude towards, and reflects on the clash between Eastern and Western cultures. In his creative process, he constantly utilizes various media and materials to explore his own unique style. His works break the tranquility of traditional Chinese culture, reflecting China's rapid transformation from a state of isolation to its current position of international competitiveness. He is adept at skillfully blending Eastern traditional aesthetics, Western symbolism, and hip-hop culture, showcasing a uniquely Eastern hip-hop aesthetic that leads art trends with international appeal and forward-thinking vision. Recently, Huang Yulong's "Hoodie Man" series was exhibited at the 2022 "SCOPE Miami Beach 2022" exhibition. Huang Yulong said, "The faceless hoodie man is my expression of individual independence, freedom, rebellion, and fearlessness. Each hoodie man represents my attitude and reflections on life. I hope viewers can communicate with the soul wrapped in the hoodie, and I hope viewers can imbue the hoodie man with their own emotions and thoughts, giving him new life and meaning."
