"Top Dog" and "UPWARD" continue Huang Yulong's exploration of the intersection of street culture and hip-hop art, while also marking his first attempt at using Phoebe zhennan wood as a creative medium. Huang Yulong is adept at combining contemporary themes with traditional craftsmanship, and in these two works, he delves into the dynamic relationship between youth identity, resilience, and a sense of belonging.

Golden nanmu wood is highly valued in Chinese culture, renowned for its tall, straight trunks and delicate grain, with patterns resembling interwoven gold threads, grid lines, and mountain peaks. This choice of material not only reflects the artist's connection to their cultural roots but also echoes the themes of strength and endurance in the work.
Huang Yulong skillfully utilizes the unique texture and color of Phoebe zhennan wood. The wood's grain resembles the marks of time, guiding viewers to contemplate themes of identity, belonging, and self-discovery. By combining the core spirit of street culture with the natural beauty of Phoebe zhennan wood, Huang Yulong not only continues the vitality and freedom of street art but also infuses his works with deeper cultural and philosophical connotations.
In *Top Dog*, Huang Yulong sculpts a seated figure wearing a signature hoodie. The hoodie, a symbol of street culture, represents both group identity and individual belonging. The figure's relaxed posture exudes an air of ease and freedom, while the natural texture and luster of the golden nanmu wood add warmth and depth to the work. This sculpture captures the duality of street life—both brimming with primal energy and containing the potential for introspection—while subtly paying homage to the enduring influence of traditional craftsmanship. The figure's confident yet approachable demeanor becomes a metaphor for youthful resilience and creativity, bridging the past and present.
"UPWARD" centers on a standing figure, whose upright posture symbolizes strength and determination. The straight and continuous grain of the golden nanmu wood further reinforces the steadfastness and resolve conveyed by the sculpture. The figure's rounded contours and smooth surface create a sense of harmony and balance, inviting the viewer to engage in a silent dialogue about identity and community. Through this work, Huang Yulong not only celebrates the vitality of daily life but also reflects on broader human experience, exploring themes of perseverance and self-discovery.
