VOLTAIRE is a hooded figure sculpture that emerged from the artist’s deep memory of academic drawing and classical plaster cast studies. When Huang Yulong imagined creating a sculptural portrait, the image of the Voltaire plaster cast naturally appeared in his mind — a familiar visual memory formed through years of artistic training.
The work transforms this classical reference into Huang Yulong’s signature hoodie language. The traditional sculptural bust is reimagined with a hooded form, creating a dialogue between classical art education and contemporary street culture. Its dark resin surface gives the work a quiet, solid, and mysterious presence.
Rather than presenting a conventional portrait, VOLTAIRE becomes a reflection on memory, artistic discipline, and the way past visual experiences continue to shape creative expression.
