A contemporary reinterpretation of traditional cultural symbols through hoodie culture and youth identity.
N.E.S.W continues Huang Yulong’s signature Hoodie Man series, transforming the Four Heavenly Kings from traditional Chinese culture into four contemporary hoodie-clad figures within modern street youth culture. The work creates a cross-temporal dialogue between tradition and the present, East and West, historical memory and everyday contemporary life.
Each figure corresponds to a different color element, echoing the original symbolic colors of the Four Heavenly Kings. Through this transformation, the work brings religious and traditional cultural imagery into a contemporary context, turning these guardian-like figures into modern urban cultural symbols.
Presented as a set of four resin sculptures, N.E.S.W reflects Huang Yulong’s ongoing exploration of cultural identity, collective memory, and the relationship between traditional symbols and contemporary visual culture.
